Chinese ceramic statues and porcelain pottery have been an important art form in that country for thousands of years. Statues produced during the Ming Dynasty and the blue-and-white porcelain pottery of the Tang Dynasty are treasures included in many museum collections.

The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was a time of revolutionary fervor in China and the porcelain of that time celebrated Mao’s teaching and revolutionary spirit, with a focus on hard work by “heroes of the revolution” rejecting old values of nature and beauty in art. Peasant-soldiers, factory workers, and other ordinary people are memorialized in porcelain pieces we have collected over decades.

The Cultural Revolution also brought upheaval, with young Red Guards directing public humiliations of those deemed to be counter-revolutionary. Known as “stinking intellectuals” (“chou lao jiu”) the elites – professors, business people, and landlords - were publicly shamed by being forced to kneel and sometimes wear dunce hats while confessing crimes against society. These public humiliations are also documented in porcelain pieces.

China’s ceramic statues celebrated the leadership of Chairman Mao, announced the country’s status as a world power with a strong military, and spotlighted people from just about every walk of life. These unique pieces have also become features in the collections of many museums and art lovers.
