Pierre Bonnard was a French painter and printmaker whose art gained worldwide popularity in the late 19^th and first half of the 20^th centuries. He is widely regarded as one of the leading colorists of all time, and his scenes, from domestic interiors to the seaside of the French Riviera, reflect a mastery of the use of color and light. Bonnard was heavily influenced by Japanese printmaking, and for most of his life, he was better known as a printmaker than a painter. His work is featured in most of the world’s great museums, and has in recent years been the subject of exhibitions at the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The great Henri Matisse reflected that “Bonnard is a great artist for our time, and, naturally, for posterity”.
